You've just booked your flights and ferries for an exciting escapade in the Greek islands. You want to embody the classic look of the Greek goddess of Athena, or really any Greek goddess in general. So, what do you pack?
If you're looking to hightail it to the Greek islands this summer, these are some essential items that are must-haves for your island-hopping adventure. I first went to Greece on a heritage trip with my family back in 2015, and it's safe to say that I wasn't thinking much about my style on that trip. I pretty much wore t-shirts and running shorts to run around in, which were popular at the time for my age group. But now that my style has evolved and I'd like to think that I have a better sense of fashion than I had back then, I can actually look forward to the pictures that I'll come back with on my trip to Greece this summer, 7 years after my original trip. Some of these items are handmade in Greece and are sold by Greek-American companies dedicated to bringing the best of Greece to the U.S. These stores support Greek artisans and aim to showcase the beauty of the Greek aesthetic and culture to others. If you want to support Greek designers by sporting their wear in the Greek islands, these stores are the place to shop. So here are my recommendations for the best fashion finds and travel essentials to bring with you on your Mamma Mia adventure throughout the islands.
CLOTHES & SHOES: The Essentials
1. Bathing suits
Can purchase off of Hellenic Aesthetic or Sorbet Island website. Sorbet Island offers this suit in 14 different colors.
One size fits all with this chic suit. The Riva One Piece Swimsuit is made out of hyper-flexible fabric, so you won't have to worry about anything other than how much fun you're having as you cliff jump into the bright blue sea. Hellenic Aesthetic is now one of my favorite places to shop, as it's the first Greek fashion retailer in the United States that proudly sources and sells items and clothing that are made by Greek designers. From swimsuits, to handmade Greek jewelry, to housewares and more, Hellenic Aesthetic has it all.
2. Sandals
The Ani Sandals by Laiík - $150
Available in the colors Metallic Gold, Greek Stone Grey and White, Black, Berry, and Natural.
Laiík's sandals are handmade in Greece by 3rd-generation craftsmen and craftswomen with a sleek, minimalistic design. Laiík uses luxe materials such as vegetable-tanned Italian leathers to make their sandals. This company is modern, conscious, and classic in its approach to displaying Greek craftsmanship. You'll soon be feeling like the goddess Athena for your Greek island hopping adventure with these comfortable and stylish Greek sandals.
3. Sunglasses
Comes in 13 different colors.
These sunglasses are a summer staple. Protect your eyes from that strong Greek sun as you island hop and explore the winding pathways in the town, eat lunch by the sea, or hang out by the water. Even though they're more on the expensive side, I like how these glasses come with its own case and a cleaning cloth to wipe away all of the salty mist coming from the sea.
4. Sundress
Available in the colors Blue Multi Floral, Black Jack, and White Lillies.
This Old Navy sundress will be your best friend during your island hopping adventure. It's super versatile, and you can wear it out to lunch or dinner or even as a cover-up! I personally like that this dress comes in white, because it looks clean, simple, and classy, especially against the white walls of Santorini and Mykonos.
MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS: The Essentials
1. Sunscreen
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra Light Facial Sunscreen SPF 60 - $30.99
With a name like "Anthelios," this is the perfect sunscreen to pack in your beach bag. 'Anthelios' means "opposite the sun" in Greek, and you can surely fend off a sunburn after reapplying this during your day out in the sun. La Roche-Posay is a brand that has a great reputation and is recommended by dermatologists worldwide. The sunscreen is lightweight, has a matte finish, and it doesn't leave a white cast. What's not to love!
2. Camera
You can never go wrong with a waterproof camera! Use this camera to snap all of your underwater finds in the Aegean Sea. It has a shock-proof rubber shell and its lens is sunscreen and scratch resistant.
3. Tote Bag
Available in the colors Faded Rust, Faded Earth, Frosted Willow, Golden Spinach, and Coal.
Personally, I think that Madewell sells the best tote bags! This bag is perfect for traveling and is also nice and lightweight for when you're hopping between the islands. The bag has a padded laptop compartment, plenty of pockets, and is made out of recycled material. It even has a luggage pass-through sleeve so that you don't have to worry about hanging onto it in the security line at the airport.
4. Bandana
Available in the colors Mauve Shadow, Afterglow Red, French Vanilla, Lighthouse, Golden Pecan, Light Straw, Dusted Rose, Distant Lavender, Sweet Dahlia, Antique Cream, Sandy Shore, Faded Seagrass, Weathered Olive, Tropical Coral, True Black Multi, Antique Cream Multi, and Tungsten Glow Multi. Price varies depending on color.
Madewell has a simplistic yet timeless style that just can't be beat. Their bandanas will not only make you feel cute and put together, but they will also protect your hair from that strong Greek island wind on your island hopping adventure!
